Illumination Problem

Posted By tiwule on December 7, 2009

IMG_5759

Having our TIWULE fully assembled. The next job is make sure the hand gesture can detect well by the computer. The most important thing after camera was the illumination of IR light in the surface. Since we still didin’t find the ideal material for the diffusser. the illuminator emittion must be done well.

Testing the CCV, the blob tracking was not work well.. the detected blob was not resulted as epected. So we try to change the position and add one iluminator again.

Problem With OS Installation ( again.. )

IMG_5741

Being successfully install Windows XP 64bit to our TIWULE based intel i5 processor doesn’t makes us happy. Since the compatibility problem become one of the most issue, the CCV ( Communitty Core Vision doesn’t wanna runs well ).

We accuse that CCV doesn’t run at 64bit. We try to install XP 32 bit but problem appears and appears.

Thanks to partition Magic 9.0 that makes us able to make some “format” to our hardisk.

Tiwule New Logo ( Concept )

Posted By tiwule on December 5, 2009

Creating the package concept and publication media for market use of TIWULE create some conclution that the existing logo is to sharp and looks rigid. We need some more flexible logo. After some minutes in front of the computer, the result was some such simple and smooth new logo.

Thinking about Diffuser

Posted By tiwule on November 30, 2009

Since the acrylic was transparent and unable to catch the projecting image from LCD Projector, we need some semi transparant media to catch the image to be seen by user. We try to use some material like silicon, oil paper and some plactic got from the lcd monitor.

IMG_5664

Actually the most ideal material was the plastic from LCD monitor. But since we don’t know the name and it was hard to find we try to use another media. But the result was not as good as expected.

IMG_5662

The oil paper produce noised image, the silicon makes the image blur.

According to some refference in the internet. The ideal material was Projection Screen and Rear Projection Screen by Rosebrand which is available  from it official site. We try to order. Hopefully it can arrive as soon as possible.

Ideal OS for Intel i5

Posted By tiwule on November 30, 2009

We try to use as good computer as possible to handle the multitask job. We decided to use intel i5 based computer. Using new architecture proessor sometimes makes problem with the software. The first time we use microsoft seven ( as recommended by Intel ). After some trial we decide to go back to XP and work with that friendly OS ( read : familiar ). But we got some problem. The uninstall and install wasn’t runs well.

IMG_5024

We decided to use live cd from ubuntu. But some problem also appears

IMG_5029

Found the problem, it was because of the partition of seven which is ubable to detect by the installer. After correcting with partition magic. The show was go on.. Here we are. Windows XP 64 bit for maximal performance ;) .

Everything was Ready.. Time to Realize TIWULE

Posted By tiwule on November 24, 2009

Finally the ordered lens + camera from canada has been arrived. The realization of Computer and LCD Projector also has been accepted. Means we will use the short throw Toshiba TDP-EW25 instead doing reseach in lenses for now. The time for calculating the proper size of lens, the focus will use, and the distance between the combination of the lens needs time and was not enough to face our deadline, facing APICTA 2009.So we make research on the lens to our next agenda after APICTA 2009.

It was little difficult to get the TDP-EW25 LCD Projector since this projector isn’t commonly use because of the price was rather expensive. We feel lucky become student in STMIK AMIKOM Yogyakarta. Our college so much support the student to create and develop some product. So our proposal to realize the approximately USD 1500 short throw LCD projector was accpeted. Even the proposal accepted we still have to found shop which ready to sell this product. After go to several shop, we get the “last” on the shop stock at the time.

The problem occurs when we got the size of the TDP-EW25 were much bigger that the refference projector we use before. Means we must do little modification to the frame first before use it as system output.

proj

The ordered lens also has arrived. The Fire i board B/W camera which able to give input at 640 x 480 px in the 30fps. Directly from Canada by post with help from some friends, because Indonesia isn’t included in the online shop country list.

cam

Since multitasking encumbrance required high performance computer to execute the algorithm, The proper and suitable computer is needed to handle this process. So we decide to build the host computer based intel i5 combined with HD 4370 512 DDR5.

Experiment in Lenses

Posted By tiwule on November 12, 2009

Only having long distance capable projecting LCD makes us have to think how to make large size image in short distance. The idea is two, add concave lense by it divergen characteristic or change the flat mirror into the convex mirror.

lenses

It was hard to find the pure convex mirror because the refference lens only available for spion mirror used in car, etc. But fortunately it was easy to find the lens. Both concav and convex were ready to be bought in different focus.

IMG_4515

So we ready to start the experiment. We use the long throwing projecting LCD from our college and put some combination of the lense on it.

The convex lens needed to focusing the projecting image to be contiued to the concave lens.

We want to know the characteristic of the lenses first, so we try to put the combination lens at the extreme state before make some conclution. The result is the expected size we found at 5/25 ( concav/convex ).It creates the largest size.

extreme_small

After we found the ideal convex’s Focus Length was 5 cm. We continue our experiment to search the ideal distance. Since TIWULE space also limited, the closest distance is what we expected.

distance_small

We found that the ideal distance ( closest ) is combine the 5cm/10cm.

We almost forget that the curvature rate of the resulted image also be consiceration since it was projection large image as seen in the monitor. So we try to use the real input from computer.

result_small

Seems that we need some further combination of the lens to create the flat image on the screen. So the next project was “How to get the flat projected image”.

The Ordered Lens and Camera

Posted By tiwule on November 10, 2009

As mentioned before, we need some camera to capture the hand gesture from the user as input. The previous project use standart computer webcam which available in the computer shop and comonly use for chatting, etc. But because of some bigger size of the input screen and more complex design of the TIWULE project, we need higher performance of the camera. After browse some literature, we found some suitable camera which is available to be ordered in the http://1394store.com/eshop/ . The name was Fire-i Board Camera B/W  which excess in it frame rate ( Uncompressed VGA b/w picture up to 30 fps in Y-MONO ) and operational at 1394 400 Mbps.

fiboardmono

The big input screen which is allowed multiuser to interact need the camera able to coverage all of the input screen zone. So the additional lens is required. In the same site, we found suitable lense which is support the camera to coverage the area as 1,9mm fish eye lense.

19mm

The lens price was $30,00 while the camera was &149,00. All of the product were ordered from canada and still we wait for the arrival.

Research With Some Lenses and Mirror

Posted By tiwule on November 9, 2009

The main problem we found of buliding TIWULE was the reqruitment for LCD Projector. We need some projector which is able to make some projection in a short distance.

Browsing on some literature, the suitable model was Toshiba TDP-EW25.  It can project image shorten than another product. It was realted to the design construction. Shorten the projector distance with the monitor, smaller the construction size.

TDW

To make the ergonomic design. So we decide the height must not more than 700mm ( ideal height for table to operate on it surface regarding to humans tall  ). But it was a challenge for us to make use the available projector in office to be able project image in expected size without buying the new expensive  Toshiba TDP-EW25.

So we impelemnt the physics theory by use some concave lenses right on the projector lenses. We have buy several.. and it’s time to do some research.. ;)
